Ice Hockey Nights in Europe
The fans and their passion for the game
I’m no book reviewer but I felt compelled to write after Jonathan Northall published a book about NHL fans in Europe.
Jonathan came upon the idea after a friend of his wrote a book about football (soccer) and thought NHL fans in Europe would make a great subject.
The book has been a labour of love, with work officially beginning back in February, 2012.
A series of eight questions(one a week) were sent to NHL fans in Europe asking them for their views and opinions.
Through hard work, dedication and a little luck no doubt, Jonathan was able to obtain submissions from people within the following countries:
Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Norway,
Poland, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden as well as British representation from England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Not to mention finding at least one fan for all thirty teams in the NHL. Yes even Phoenix and the Columbus Blue Jackets have fans this side of the ocean!
“Who is your team and why?” is the opening question and has possibly the most diverse set of answers you could possibly wish to find. I mean realistically how do you become a fan of a game that is for the most part under the radar in Europe and where the best league in the world is thousands of miles away?
“If you were Commissioner, what one thing would you change about the NHL?” is another great question and although European fans share the hatred of Bettman like their counterparts across the ocean, there are also some interesting ideas at improving the game and making it more accessible to everyone.
Simplicity is the books biggest asset, it’s an easy read and you can pick it up from any point.
Jonathan has done a great job in compiling the responses sent in and getting each section flowing.
He introduces each question whilst given his own personal view, which I think is a nice touch.
I asked Jonathan what he hoped to achieve from publishing the book.
“I’d like hockey fans from outside of Europe to see how passionate we are. It would also be pleasing if the ‘powers that be’ at the NHL were to see it.”
I’m sure Bettman is reading his copy right now!
Ice Hockey Nights In Europe has now been published in paperback and ebook formats.
The paperback can be bought from Amazon.com plus the other European stores including UK.
The Kindle ebook is available worldwide.
