IIHF Mens U20 World Championship Team Preview
Italy have been ultra consistent for the last two campaigns, finishing with the bronze medal on both occasions. Their defense has been the team’s backbone and only allowed six goals in last years five games.
The Head Coach is Robert Chizzali, who has been a part of Italy’s coaching staff since 2007.
He’s currently coaching the brilliantly named (in my opinion) Aurora Frogs in Italy.
This will be his first campaign in charge of the Italian U20 side.
Italy have an interesting mix of players, plying their trade at all different levels.
Peter Hochkofler is a 19 year old centre man and one of the more experienced on the roster.
He’s been a part of EC Salzburg’s system since 2011, and this year and stepped into their side which competes in the MHL and has had some success with ten points this season.
Captained the U18 Italian team in 2011 and been a part of the U20’s since then.
Riccardo Lacedelli is one of the few players to have North American experience after spending last season with Northern Cyclones in the EHL. Far from disgraced himself with 15 points in 20 games and a further 3 points in 7 play-off games.
Now back with Cortina in Italy, he’s made the step up to play for their senior side making nine starts this season. This will be his first campaign for the U20’s
Michele Marchetti is in his first season in the North American Hockey League.
Started with the Soo Eagles and is now with the Brooking Blizzards and is finding life a little tough with a team that is struggling in the standings.
Last season was spent with Fassa in the top Italian league, where he has a breakout season with 20 points in 39 games. More than respectable for an 18 year old in his second professional season.
If both make the final cut then Italy will have twin brothers representing the team in Scotland.
Giovanni Morini is a centre man who looked to be the more talented of the brothers if you look at their relative points production.
Has 21 points in 24 starts for Lugano U20 this season in the Elite Jr. A.
He captained the U18 team in their last campaign registering a pair of goals and assists.
His brother Paolo is a left winger who is also stepping up to the U20 team this year.
Just one assist for him in the U18 side last season and has eight points for Lugano U20.
Daniel Morandell is an 18 year old goaltender currently with SV Kaltern who play in Austria2.
Represented the U18 side last season, starting all five games, and finished with a 3.54GAA and 0.919SV%.
Alexander Lambacher is the youngest member of the squad and the only with a 1996 birth year.
He’s been in the Mannheimer system since 2010 and has consistently put up points every season.
As part of their U18 team competing in the DNL he’s registered 25 points in 20 games.
In his first taste of international hockey with the U18 team last year he bagged a pair of assists and a goal and started all five games.
